THE BIG PIG SANCTUARY

In loving memory of Mr. Big the Pig

At the Big Pig Sanctuary, we're rescuing unwanted, neglected, homeless or abused pigs while promoting education on mini pig health and well being. We believe in taking action with compassion, love, and support in order to raise public awareness about the current pig overpopulation. Please join us by supporting our efforts to make a measurable difference in the lives of these animals.

ABOUT

The Big Pig Sanctuary was formed after the passing of our beloved and very special resident, Mr. Big. In June 2018, a Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary volunteer was at a rural shelter picking up a pig when she witnessed another pig being surrendered. While extremely upset, she alerted BSAS to what was happening. The newly surrendered pig was in horrendous shape, as he was morbidly obese, fat blind and had obviously been neglected for years. He was being fed dog food and was barely mobile. He was surrendered because his family no longer wanted him.  Dan, my husband, heard of this news from the Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary and declared that we needed to help this pig- so we tried.  While Dan rented a horse trailer and went to the shelter to get Mr. Big home, the Blind Spot Animal Sanctuary raised funds to cover Mr. Big’s veterinary care and he immediately was provided with an exam, care, a tusk and hoof trim with vaccinations when he arrived home. Mr. Big was not only terribly obese which made him fat blind, but he was neglected for many years as well. He had tusks which were growing into his face, making deep grooves in his face that were infected and very painful. His hooves had never been trimmed and this was making it hard for him to walk. We cared for Mr. Big around the clock. Mr. Big’s veterinarian has been making regular visits and we thought with the needed level of veterinary care, proper diet and love that he could make it, but sadly it wasn’t his fate. Mr. Big stopped eating and wasn’t feeling well on a Sunday evening. His veterinarian came to treat him while we were there for him and provided constant care. Sadly, he passed away on July 12th 2018, around 8pm.  His passing was due to organ failure and illness from the years of previous neglect. We all tried, but this story wasn’t meant to be a happy one, as Alesja Daehnrich said. Mr. Big was loved so immensely for the short time he was in our care, and we feel his story reached many others’ hearts. His short time here will forever be marked in our souls, and the reason why we want to continue to help others, in his name.
